Ombre is a French word meaning “shadow” or “shade”. In the design world, it refers to a gradual change from one color to another, usually moving tints and shades from light to dark. It can be applied to hair color, makeup, clothing…and design!

When used as a background, ombre can add a touch of drama and elegance to your design. It’s also a great way to add depth and interest, without being too “in your face”. And best of all, it’s easy to do in Canva!

Here’s how:

  1. Start with a solid background color. Choose a color that you want to be the base of your ombre effect. This will be the lightest color in the design.
  2. Create a new layer. Go to the Layers panel, click on the “+” icon and select “Rectangle” from the drop-down menu. This will add a new layer on top of your background color.
  3. Draw your rectangle. Click and drag your mouse to draw a rectangle that covers the entire canvas. Make sure it’s big enough so that you can see the gradient effect when we apply it later.
  4. Apply a gradient fill. With your rectangle selected, go to the Fills panel. Click on the “Gradient fill” option and choose the type of gradient you want to use. For this tutorial, we’ll be using a “Linear gradient”.
  5. Add your colors. Click on the “+” icon next to the “Color 1” field and select the lightest color from your palette. Do the same for “Color 2”, but choose the darkest color. You can also adjust the location of each color stop by clicking and dragging them along the gradient bar.
  6. Adjust the transparency. With your rectangle still selected, go to the Opacity slider in the top toolbar and adjust it until you’re happy with the effect. We went with an opacity of 60%.

And that’s it! You now have a beautiful ombre background for your design.
