How Do You Expand in Photoshop?

Last updated on September 24, 2022 @ 1:37 pm

In Photoshop, you can expand your work area by choosing Image > Canvas Size. In the Canvas Size dialog box, enter the dimensions you want for the expanded canvas.

You can choose a preset canvas size from the drop-down menu, or enter custom dimensions in the Width and Height fields. When expanding the canvas, you can choose to add padding around the image content, or to expand the canvas without adding padding.

If you want to add new content to your image, you can use the Clone Stamp tool to copy pixels from one area of the image to another. To use the Clone Stamp tool, first select it from the Tools palette.

PRO TIP: This article contains instructions on how to expand an image in Photoshop. However, expanding an image too much can result in the loss of quality and detail. Use caution when expanding images, and be sure to check the results before saving.

Then, position the cursor over an area of the image that you want to copy. Hold down the Alt key (Windows) or Option key (Mac OS) and click to sample an area of the image. Next, position the cursor over the area where you want to paste the sampled pixels and click or drag to paint them in place.

You can also use Photoshop’s healing brushes to retouch areas of your image. The Spot Healing Brush tool heals small areas of an image by blending them with surrounding pixels.

The Healing Brush tool heals larger areas by using a sample of pixels from another area of the image. To use either tool, select it from the Tools palette and then click or drag over the area that you want to retouch.

There are many other ways to expand your work area in Photoshop. For more information, consult Photoshop’s help files or online tutorials.
