Christmas is one of the most special times of the year, and what better way to show your holiday spirit than by making your own Christmas hat in Photoshop! Follow this tutorial and you’ll have your own unique hat in no time.
First, open a new document in Photoshop. You can make your document any size you want, but for this tutorial we’ll make ours 8×10 inches.
Next, create a new layer and fill it with a solid color. We’ll use red for our hat, but you can use any color you like.
Now it’s time to create the brim of our hat. To do this, create a new layer and use the Ellipse Tool (U) to draw a circle. Make sure the circle is slightly smaller than the width of your document.
Fill the circle with a radial gradient going from a lighter shade of your chosen color to a darker shade. We’ll use a light red for our gradient, but again, you can use any colors you like.
Now we need to add some dimension to our hat by creating a shadow under the brim. To do this, create a new layer and draw a black ellipse that’s slightly smaller than the one we created in step 3. Set this layer’s Opacity to 50% so the shadow isn’t too harsh.
Next, we’ll add a pom-pom to the top of our hat. Create a new layer and use the Ellipse Tool (U) to draw another circle.
This one should be even smaller than the last two circles we created. Fill it with a solid color – we’ll use white for our pom-pom.
To give our pom-pom some dimension, we’ll add a drop shadow. Go to Layer > Layer Style > Drop Shadow and enter the following settings:
Distance: 2px
Spread: 0%
Size: 5px
Color: Black (or whatever dark color goes well with your chosen pom-pom color)
Opacity: 50%
The final step is to add some text to our hat! Create a new layer and use the Horizontal Type Tool (T) to add some holiday cheer in whatever font and color you like. We went with “Merry Christmas” in white Helvetica Bold at 48pt, but feel free to get creative!
