How Do You Rasterize an Image in Photoshop?

Last updated on September 24, 2022 @ 12:40 pm

When you want to create a raster image, also called a bitmap, you’ll need to use Photoshop. This type of image is made up of tiny pixels, and is best used for images that won’t be enlarged, like website photos or small illustrations. Here’s how to rasterize an image in Photoshop:

Open your image in Photoshop and select the “Image” menu. Select “Mode” and then choose “Bitmap.” A warning message will appear; click “OK.”

PRO TIP: When rasterizing an image in Photoshop, it is important to note that this process will convert the image into a pixels-based format. This means that the image will no longer be able to be edited as a vector image. Additionally, the quality of the image may be reduced when rasterized.

In the “Bitmap Options” window that appears, choose the output settings you desire. The default is “50% Threshold,” which creates a black and white image.

You can also choose from several dithering options to create a more unique effect. When you’re finished, click “OK.”

Your image is now rasterized! To save it, select the “File” menu and choose “Save As.” In the window that appears, select a file format from the drop-down menu and then click “Save.”
