Is Azure SQL database backed up?

Last updated on September 25, 2022 @ 12:03 pm

Azure SQL database is backed up by the cloud-based storage service. The backup is taken every 12 hours and stored in an S3 bucket.

PRO TIP: Yes, Azure SQL databases are backed up, but there are some caveats to consider. First, Azure SQL databases are only backed up for disaster recovery purposes and not for data protection or user-initiated backup and restore. Second, Azure SQL databases are only backed up to the extent that they have changed since the last backup was taken – so if you have made extensive changes to your database since the last backup, those changes may not be included in the backup. Finally, you should be aware that the backup process may impact the performance of your database.

The backup can be accessed through the Azure portal.
