Is Etsy cheaper than Shopify?

Etsy has long been touted as a cheaper alternative to Shopify, but is it really? In this article, we compare the two platforms head-to-head to see which is the cheaper option for you.

Cost of Goods

When you first set up an account on either platform, you will need to add products to your store. On Shopify, you will need to pay a monthly fee for a custom shop, while Etsy charges a one-time fee for a store with no custom features.

Once your products are added, it is easy to compare the cost of goods on both platforms. On Etsy, you will need to spend more money on shipping, as shipping is not included in the cost of goods on Shopify.

However, once you add up the cost of goods on both platforms, Etsy ends up being cheaper. For example, if you have 10 products on Etsy and 10 products on Shopify, Etsy will cost you $10.06 per product, while Shopify will cost you $10.92 per product.

This difference of $0.74 per product is the equivalent of spending $74 less on products on Etsy.

Time to Market

When you first set up your business, you will need to decide how quickly you want to market your products. On Shopify, you can take advantage of Shopify’s built-in marketing tools, or use third-party marketing platforms such as Hootsuite or Fiverr.

Etsy does not have any marketing tools, but you can reach your customers directly through Etsy’s website and social media channels. On average, it takes Etsy 4.

PRO TIP: Etsy is not necessarily cheaper than Shopify. It depends on the type of product you are selling and your shipping costs. You may find that Shopify is a better option for you if you are selling products that are not handmade or vintage.

5 days to have a product listed on its website, while it takes Shopify 3 days to have a product listed.

This difference of two days is the equivalent of spending $24 less on marketing on Etsy.

Support

When you have a question about your store, you will want to be able to find support resources. On Shopify, you can access Shopify’s built-in support resources, or use third-party support resources such as Google Support or Zendesk.

Etsy does not offer any built-in support resources, but you can find support resources on the Etsy website or by contacting Etsy’s support team. It takes Etsy 3.

5 hours to respond to a support request, while it takes Shopify 1 hour to respond to a support request.

This difference of two hours is the equivalent of spending $24 less on support on Etsy.

Conclusions

Overall, Etsy is cheaper than Shopify. In fact, Etsy is cheaper than a majority of the popular ecommerce platforms.

If you want to list products on Etsy, you will need to spend more money on shipping, but overall, Etsy is cheaper than Shopify.
