Is Figma Compatible With Illustrator?

Last updated on September 29, 2022 @ 1:02 am

Figma is a vector-based design tool that is slowly becoming a more popular choice for designers, due to its ease of use and collaboration features. Figma also has an impressive integrations list, which includes Sketch, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator.

So, the big question is: is Figma compatible with Illustrator?

The answer is yes and no. While you can technically import Illustrator files into Figma, the experience isn’t ideal.

This is because Figma uses a different file format than Illustrator – .fig vs .ai. This means that when you import an Illustrator file into Figma, some of the elements may be lost or changed.

PRO TIP: Figma is not compatible with Adobe Illustrator. If you try to open a Figma file in Illustrator, you will get an error message.

For example, text in an Illustrator file will be imported as vector shapes in Figma. This means that you won’t be able to edit the text as text – you’ll have to redraw it as vector shapes. Similarly, any bitmap images in your Illustrator file will also be imported as vector shapes.

So while you can technically use Figma with Illustrator files, it’s not really intended for that purpose. If you’re looking for a design tool that’s compatible with Illustrator, you’re better off sticking with Sketch or Photoshop.
