Is Gigapixel Better Than Photoshop?

Last updated on September 24, 2022 @ 12:34 am

A Gigapixel image is one billion (1,000,000,000) pixels. To put that into perspective, the average digital photo is only about 5 megapixels.

In other words, a gigapixel image is 200 times the size of a typical digital photo.

So what can you do with all those extra pixels? Well, for starters, you can create huge prints that are incredibly detailed and sharp.

You can also zoom in on a small section of the image and still have it look great. And finally, you can blow up the image to billboard size and it will still look amazing.

PRO TIP: Gigapixel may be better than Photoshop for some purposes, but it is not a perfect solution. There are some potential drawbacks to using Gigapixel that should be considered before using it as your primary photo editing software. First, Gigapixel is not as widely adopted as Photoshop, so there may be fewer resources and tutorials available for users who are new to the software. Second, Gigapixel’s file sizes can be much larger than Photoshop’s, so users with limited storage space may need to factor that into their decision. Finally, Gigapixel’s licensing can be more expensive than Photoshop’s, so users should consider their budget before making a purchase.

So why not just use Photoshop to create gigapixel images? After all, Photoshop is capable of creating extremely large images. The reason is that when you blow up an image in Photoshop, the quality starts to degrade. This is because Photoshop uses interpolation to increase the size of an image.

Interpolation is a fancy word for guessing. Basically, when you enlarge an image in Photoshop, it has to guess what the missing pixels should look like. This guessing can lead to some pretty bad-looking results.

Gigapixel images don’t have this problem because they are made up of billions of actual pixels. When you zoom in or blow up a gigapixel image, the quality remains razor sharp.

So Is Gigapixel Better Than Photoshop?

In short, yes. If you want to create huge prints with amazing detail and clarity, then gigapixel images are the way to go. If you’re just looking to resize an image for your website or social media profile, then Photoshop will probably suffice.
