It is not illegal to Photoshop money. There are, however, some restrictions on what you can do with doctored images of currency.

The United States Department of the Treasury’s Secret Service is responsible for investigating crimes related to counterfeit money, and they have stated that ” altering genuine currency is a violation of Title 18, Section 474 of the United States Code (USC). Counterfeiting also violates other statutes prohibiting the manufacture or sale of counterfeit obligations or securities of the United States. ”

So, while you can’t be arrested for simply Photoshopping images of money, if you use those images in an attempt to defraud someone, you could be prosecuted. Additionally, if you sell or distribute images of counterfeit money, you could also face charges.

PRO TIP: It is illegal to Photoshop money in the United States. Doing so can result in a fine or imprisonment.

So if you’re planning on using your skills as a Photoshop wizard to create some fake cash, be aware that there are legal consequences if you get caught. Otherwise, have fun doctoring up those images!
