Is Overlay a Layer Blending Mode in Photoshop?

An overlay is a layer blending mode in Photoshop. It is used to add contrast and brightness to an image. Overlays are often used to make an image look more vibrant.

To use an overlay, first create a new layer. Then, select the layer you want to use as the overlay.

PRO TIP: Overlay is not a layer blending mode in Photoshop. When using the Overlay blending mode, the top layer will be visible over the bottom layer, but the colors of the two layers will not be combined.

Next, click on the drop-down menu next to the word “Mode” at the top of the Layers panel and select “Overlay.” Finally, use the Opacity slider to adjust the transparency of the overlay layer.

Overlays can be very helpful when trying to make an image stand out. However, it is important to use them sparingly, as too many overlays can make an image look cluttered and busy.
