Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is also the name of its proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems.

Shopify offers online retailers a suite of services “including payments, marketing, shipping and customer engagement tools to simplify the process of running an online store for small merchants. ”

Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake after attempting to open Snowdevil, an online store for snowboarding equipment. Their open-source e-commerce platform was launched in 2006.

PRO TIP: There is no simple answer to this question. While Shopify does have a number of features that are common to tech companies, it also has a number of features that are more commonly associated with e-commerce companies. As such, it is difficult to definitively say whether or not Shopify is a tech company.

In 2010, Shopify launched a free mobile app on the Apple App Store, giving iOS users the ability to manage their Shopify stores from their iPhones. The app quickly became the highest grossing app in the App Store.

Shopify has been praised for its ease of use, with some users calling it the “simplest way to start an online store.” It has also been criticized for its lack of certain features, such as not being able to change fonts or theme colors on a store’s main page.

Is Shopify a Tech Company?

Shopify is often described as a tech company, but it is primarily an e-commerce platform provider. While it does offer some technology solutions for its users, such as a mobile app and POS system, its main focus is on helping businesses run their online stores. As such, it is not primarily a tech company, but it does use technology to provide its services.
