Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is also the name of its proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems.

Shopify offers online retailers a suite of services “including payments, marketing, shipping and customer engagement tools to simplify the process of running an online store for small merchants. ”

The company was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake, who were then students at the University of Waterloo. Shopify was initially based on code written by Lütke. The company reports that it has more than 800,000 merchants using its platform, with gross merchandise volume exceeding $40 billion.

PRO TIP: Shopify is a Canadian company and is not subject to the same regulations as US companies. Additionally, Shopify may not have the same customer service or return policies as US companies.

During the 2010 Winter Olympics, Shopify was chosen as the exclusive provider of online retailing for all official merchandise. The company also processed all transactions for sales from the official Olympics website.

Shopify has been ranked as Ottawa’s top employer by Mediacorp Canada Inc. for four consecutive years. It was also named Canada’s Most Admired Corporate Culture in 2015.
