Is Shopify an Indian Company?

Shopify is a Canadian multinational e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is also the name of its proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems. Shopify offers online retailers a suite of services “including payments, marketing, shipping and customer engagement tools to simplify the process of running an online store for small merchants.

Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake after attempting to open Snowdevil, an online store for snowboarding equipment. Shopify was launched in 2006.

Lütke, Weinand, and Lake spent the next two years working on developing the platform. In 2008, Shopify launched an iPhone app that allowed offline stores to accept credit card payments using Apple’s new iPhone hardware.

In 2010, Shopify started its Build-A-Business competition, in which participants create a business using its platform. The winners of the competition receive cash prizes and mentorship from entrepreneurs such as Tony Robbins, Tim Ferriss, Jason Fried, and Cassey Ho.

Shopify has been profitable since 2012. It generated $100 million in revenue during Q4 2015 (its first $100 million quarter), $127 million in Q4 2016, $221 million in Q4 2017, and $340 million in Q4 2018.

In 2019 it reported revenues of $1.58 billion CAD. As of March 2020, Shopify had a market capitalization of over $30 billion CAD making it one of Canada’s most valuable companies.

Shopify went public on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on May 21st 2015 under the ticker symbol “SHOP”.
