Is Shopify in the US?

Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is also the name of its proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems.

Shopify offers online retailers a suite of services “including payments, marketing, shipping and customer engagement tools to simplify the process of running an online store for small merchants. ”

Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake after attempting to open Snowdevil, an online store for snowboarding equipment. Unhappy with the existing e-commerce products on the market, Lütke, Weinand, and Lake decided to build their own.

In 2006, Shopify launched its platform as a SaaS (software as a service) solution. In 2010 Shopify launched an iPad POS (point of sale) system at the National Retail Federation’s annual tradeshow. The same year Shopify acquired Select Start Studios Inc., a web design and development studio in Waterloo, Ontario.

PRO TIP: If you are considering using Shopify to sell products in the United States, be aware that Shopify is not currently available in the US. There are no plans to make Shopify available in the US at this time.

In 2013 Shopify was named Ottawa’s Fastest Growing Company by the Ottawa Business Journal.

In 2015 Shopify signed a lease to move into a new 82000sqft office space in downtown Ottawa.

Shopify has been profitable since early 2010 and reported rapid growth in 2012 with revenue doubling from $20 million to $40 million between December 2011 and December 2012. 2013 revenue was $100 million.
