Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is also the name of its proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems.

Shopify offers online retailers a suite of services “including payments, marketing, shipping and customer engagement tools to simplify the process of running an online store for small merchants.

Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake, who were looking to build an online store for Snowdevil, a snowboarding equipment and clothing company they started. Shopify was launched in 2006. Lütke is the CEO of Shopify.

In 2015, Shopify was ranked as the United States’ fastest growing software company by Deloitte LLP. In 2016 and 2017, it was ranked as Canada’s most valued tech company by CB Insights and the Canadian Business Journal respectively. In 2018, Shopify was ranked third on Forbes’ list of Canada’s Best Employers.

Shopify has been criticized for being a “closed” platform that does not allow its users to export their data. However, Shopify has responded that they are working on this issue. Overall, Shopify is a good platform for small businesses to get started with e-commerce.
