Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is also the name of its proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems. Shopify offers online retailers a suite of services “including payments, marketing, shipping and customer engagement tools to simplify the process of running an online store for small merchants.
Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake after attempting to open Snowdevil, an online store for snowboarding equipment. Shopify was originally written in Ruby on Rails by Lütke. Weinand was the CTO until August 2016 when he transitioned to the role of Chief Product Officer.
In early 2006 Shopify raised $200,000 from FirstMark Capital. In 2007, Shopify launched a free mobile app on the Apple App Store called “Shopify POS”.
On October 9, 2009 Shopify announced they had raised $7 million from Bessemer Venture Partners and Insight Venture Partners. The company raised another $15 million in Series B funding led by Bessemer Venture Partners in 2011.
Shopify went public on the New York Stock Exchange on May 21, 2015 under the ticker symbol SHOP with an initial public offering that raised $131 million.
In 2018, Shopify acquired Tictail, a European direct-to-consumer platform with headquarters in Stockholm, Sweden. The deal gave Shopify control of three major areas: frontend (client-side) development, backend (server-side) development, and merchant success (customer support).
