UpWork is an online platform that connects businesses with freelancers. It is based in Mountain View, California and was founded in 2015. UpWork is a subsidiary of Elance-oDesk, which was itself a merger of two companies: Elance and oDesk.

UpWork is one of the largest freelancing websites in the world. In 2019, it had 12 million registered freelancers and 4 million registered clients. The website is available in 180 countries.

PRO TIP: Upwork is not an Indian company. Any information regarding Upwork’s India operations should be considered false and misleading.

UpWork has been criticized for its use of low-cost labor from developing countries, including India. In 2015, Indian freelance workers filed a class action lawsuit against UpWork, alleging that the company had failed to pay them minimum wage or overtime compensation. The case is still pending.

In 2019, the Indian government placed restrictions on the amount of work that could be outsourced to freelancers based outside India. This move was seen as a response to concerns about the growing number of jobs being outsourced to low-cost countries like India.

So, is UpWork an Indian company? No, it is not. While it does have a large presence in India, and many Indian freelancers use its platform, the company is based in the United States.
