Is WiX a Installer?

Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 12:48 am

WiX is a free and open source toolset that builds Windows installation packages from XML source code. It supports a command-line interface and can be used with Visual Studio to author MSI and MSM setups.

WiX was originally developed by Microsoft employees Rob Mensching and Kevin Moore as a way to create MSI files for the Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI) tool. The name “WiX” is a portmanteau of “Windows Installer XML”.

GREAT NEWS:

Exciting update! We've collaborated with Wix to offer WBI users with a free plan for all website creation needs - Explore the details here.

PRO TIP: WiX is not an installer. It is a developer toolkit that enables developers to create Windows Installer-based setups. Installers created with WiX can be deployed on PCs running Windows XP and later.

WiX is released under the MIT License, and its source code is hosted on GitHub. WiX is built using Microsoft’s Visual C++ compiler.

As an XML-based toolset, WiX can create Windows installation packages that are compatible with all versions of MSI, from version 2.0 to the latest version 5.0. WiX also supports installing prerequisites, such as the .NET Framework, Visual C++ Runtime Libraries, and Windows PowerShell.
