As a freelancer, you’re considered self-employed, which means you’re responsible for paying your own taxes. This can be a bit confusing and overwhelming, especially if you’re new to the world of freelancing.
But don’t worry, we’re here to help! In this article, we’ll explain what you need from UpWork in order to file your taxes correctly.
As a freelancer, the first thing you need to do is get set up with a payment method that allows you to track your income and expenses. UpWork offers two different payment methods: Payoneer and PayPal.
Payoneer is a prepaid debit card that allows you to withdraw your earnings from UpWork to your bank account or make online purchases. PayPal is an online payment processor that allows you to transfer your earnings from UpWork to your bank account or make online purchases.
Once you’ve chosen a payment method, you’ll need to provide UpWork with some basic information about yourself in order to set up your account. This includes your name, address, email address, and Social Security number or tax identification number. You’ll also need to create a strong password for your account.
-Your Social Security Number
-Your tax filing status (single, married, etc.)
-The amount of money you made on Upwork
-The amount of taxes you paid on that income
-Any deductions or credits you are claiming
Be sure to have this information ready when you file your taxes, as it may delay the processing of your return if you do not.
After you’ve set up your account and provided UpWork with your basic information, you’ll need to connect it to an existing bank account or credit card. This will allow UpWork to transfer your earnings from each client into your account. You can do this by going to the ‘Banking’ tab in your settings and clicking ‘Add Bank Account’ or ‘Add Credit Card’.
Once you’ve connected your bank account or credit card, you’ll need to provide UpWork with some additional information in order for us to process your payments correctly. This includes choosing whether you want to be paid in US dollars or in the currency of the country where you reside, as well as providing us with your tax information. You can do this by going to the ‘Taxes’ tab in your settings and clicking ‘Update Tax Information’.
It’s important to note that UpWork does not withhold any taxes from your earnings – it is up to you as the freelancer to make sure that you are paying all of the taxes that you owe. This includes federal income tax, state income tax (if applicable), self-employment tax, and any other local taxes that may be applicable. For more information on how much tax you owe as a freelancer, we recommend speaking with a tax professional or checking out the IRS website.
