What Does It Mean to Rasterize a Layer in Photoshop?

Last updated on September 23, 2022 @ 11:07 pm

When you rasterize a layer in Photoshop, you are essentially converting it to pixels. This means that the layer can no longer be edited as a vector object.

Once you rasterize a layer, you will not be able to go back and change the font or resize the object without losing quality.

There are a few reasons why you might want to rasterize a layer. One reason is if you need to apply a filter to the layer that is only available for rasterized layers.

Another reason is if you want to edit the pixels on the layer directly.

PRO TIP: Warning: Rasterizing a layer in Photoshop can permanently change the pixels in that layer. Once you rasterize a layer, you can no longer edit the individual pixels in that layer.

To rasterize a layer, simply right-click on it and select “Rasterize” from the menu. You can also go to Layer > Rasterize > Layer.
