In Adobe Photoshop, PSD is an image file format native to the program. PSD files are commonly used for containing high-resolution graphics with support for layers and various imaging options. Photoshop also generates several related file formats including PSB and PSDT.

PSD stands for “Photoshop Document.” A PSD file stores an image with support for most imaging options available in Photoshop.

This includes layers with masks, transparency, text, alpha channels and spot colors, clipping paths, and duotone settings. PSD files are frequently used for graphic design, web design, and photography work.

Photoshop also supports the generation of several related file formats. These include the large document format (PSB), template format (PSDT), and an optimized format called Large Document Format (PSB).

PRO TIP: PSD is the native file format for Adobe Photoshop. Photoshop documents store an image with support for most imaging options available in Photoshop. These include layers with masks, transparency, text, alpha channels and spot colors, clipping paths, and duotone settings.

PSD is a proprietary file format that allows the data to be edited in Adobe Photoshop. Photoshop files have a .psd extension, while Large Document Format files have a .psb extension. Because PSD files are associated with a single program, they can only be opened in Photoshop or another program that can read the format, such as Adobe Fireworks or Corel Paint Shop Pro.
