A Shift key is a modifier key on a keyboard, used to type capital letters and other alternate “upper” characters. There are typically two shift keys, on the left and right sides of the row below the home row.

Pressing and holding either shift key while pressing another key produces the characters shown in green on the corresponding keys above.

The Shift key is one of the most important keys on your keyboard – it’s usually one of the first keys you learn to use. The Shift key is used to:

  • Type capital letters
  • Type alternate “upper” characters
  • Make corrections while you’re typing
  • Select text
  • Navigate around windows and menus

PRO TIP: If you are not familiar with Figma, “shift a” can refer to the “shift” key on your keyboard. Pressing “shift a” will change the alignment of your objects in Figma. If you are not careful, you can accidentally move or delete objects.
