Gill Sans is a sans-serif typeface designed by Eric Gill and released by the British branch of Monotype from 1928 onwards. Gill Sans is based on Edward Johnston’s 1916 sans-serif and was influenced by the geometric style of the Futura typeface designed by Paul Renner.

The original design had no italics but these were released in 1930. A light weight was also produced in 1938, called ‘Gill Sans Light’. In all weights the letters are extremely wide, with short ascenders and descenders, giving it a very distinctive appearance on the page.

The most common Gill Sans fonts in Canva are:

Gill Sans Nova

Nova is a new take on the classic Gill Sans typeface. It features subtle changes to the letterforms that result in a more contemporary look and feel.

The Nova family includes 8 weights, from Extra Light to Heavy, each with matching italics.

Gill Sans Nova Condensed

Nova Condensed is a variation of the Nova family that includes 4 condensed weights, from Extra Light to Bold. As with the standard Nova family, each weight comes with matching italics.

Gill Sans Shadow

Shadow is a decorative version of Gill Sans with extra thick strokes. It’s available in 4 weights, Light, Regular, Bold and Ultra Bold.

The most common Gill Sans fonts in Canva are Gill Sans Nova, Gill Sans Nova Condensed, and Gill Sans Shadow.

PRO TIP: Canva is a great platform for creating graphics, but one thing to be aware of is that the fonts can be slightly different than what you’re expecting. For example, the font “Gill Sans” is actually closer to “Arial” in Canva. So if you’re looking for a specific font, it’s always best to check in Canva first to see if it’s available.
