A custom domain is a domain that you own and is separate from your Squarespace site. You can use a custom domain with your Squarespace site by pointing it to our servers.
This gives you the ability to use the same domain for email and website hosting.
There are two ways to set up a custom domain with Squarespace: using an existing domain or purchasing a new one through Squarespace. If you use an existing domain, you’ll need to change its DNS settings to point to our servers.
If you purchase a new domain through us, we’ll automatically configure its DNS settings for you.
Using an Existing Domain
If you have an existing domain that you’d like to use with your Squarespace site, you can point it to our servers using its DNS settings. To do this, you’ll need to add two CNAME records and one A record to your DNS settings.
Once these records are added, your domain will be automatically linked to your Squarespace site.
Adding DNS Records
To add DNS records, you’ll need to log in to your domain registrar’s account and access your DNS settings. Once you’re in your DNS settings, you’ll need to add the following records:
1. There is no guarantee that your custom domain will work with Squarespace. While Squarespace does support custom domains, there have been some reports of issues with certain domains.
2. If you use a custom domain with Squarespace, your site may be more susceptible to downtime. This is because Squarespace does not have as much control over custom domains as it does over its own domain names.
3. Be sure to read the terms of service for your custom domain before using it with Squarespace. Some providers may not allow their domains to be used withSquarespace or may impose additional restrictions.
- @ or root record:
An A record with the @ symbol or without any symbol indicates that this is the root record for your domain. This record should be pointed to our IP address: 64.34.176.194
- www CNAME record:
A CNAME record with the www subdomain points that subdomain to another URL, which in this case would be your Squarespace site URL (with the https://). For example, if your Squarespace site URL is https://www.example.com, then your www CNAME should be pointed to example.com.
- (Subdomain) CNAME record:
If you’re using a subdomain (like blog or shop) as part of your primarySquarespace URL (like https://blog.example), then you’ll need a CNAMErecord for that subdomain as well and point it to the same URL as the wwwrecord – blog.example in this case.
After You’ve Added Your Records
After adding these records, it can take up 24-48 hours for them to propagate throughout the internet’s DNS system.
