What Is a Milestone on UpWork?

Last updated on September 29, 2022 @ 10:24 pm

A Milestone on UpWork is a way to define and track progress on a project. It’s like a checkpoint or marker that lets you know how far you’ve come and what still needs to be done.

You can create Milestones for both hourly and fixed-price contracts. For hourly contracts, a Milestone indicates the number of hours you’d like to track for the project. For fixed-price contracts, a Milestone represents an agreed-upon deliverable or phase of work.

Once a Milestone is created, the client can approve it and release funds if necessary. Once the Milestone is approved, the freelancer can begin work. After the work is completed, the client can review it and leave feedback.

PRO TIP: Upwork milestone payments are not like traditional payments for work. They are not automatic and are not released until the client approves them. This can cause problems if you are expecting to be paid for work on a certain date and the client does not approve the milestone payment.
