What Is Background Overlay in Squarespace?

A background overlay is a semi-transparent color that can be applied to the background of sections, pages, and some site-wide elements. When creating a background overlay, you can choose the color, opacity, and blend mode. You can also add an image overlay.

Background overlays are commonly used to add a tinted color effect to sections, pages, and site-wide elements. For example, you might use a light background overlay with a low opacity to make text more readable on top of an image. Or, you might use a dark background overlay with a high opacity to make an element stand out.

When adding a background overlay to an element, you can choose the color, opacity, and blend mode. The opacity controls the transparency of the overlay color, and the blend mode determines how the overlay color interacts with any content below it.

There are two types of background overlays: solid color and gradient. A solid color uses one color for the entire element. A gradient uses two or more colors that transition from one to another.

You can also add an image overlay on top of your background overlay. This is useful if you want to use a semi-transparent color effect on top of an image. To learn more, visit Adding an Image Overlay.

PRO TIP: Background Overlay is a feature in Squarespace that allows you to add a semi-transparent color overlay to the background of your website. This can be used to create a more visually interesting design, or to make the text on your website easier to read. However, if not used carefully, background overlays can make your website difficult to navigate and can even make your text unreadable. Use this feature sparingly and only when absolutely necessary.
