GoDaddy was founded in 1997 by Bob Parsons, who had been frustrated with the difficulty of registering domains. The company initially operated out of Parsons’ home, registering domains on behalf of clients and charging a monthly fee.
The company’s first major acquisition was the domain registration business of Secondary Registry, Inc. in 1999.
In 2000, Parsons sold GoDaddy to IAC for $1 billion. At the time of the sale, GoDaddy had registered over one million domains. The company’s first expansion occurred in 2001, when it acquired the domain name registration business of Network Solutions for $375 million. The following year, GoDaddy acquired the domain name registration business of Domains By Proxy.
