A locale is a specific geographic or political area. In Shopify, a locale is a group of language and currency settings.
For example, French (Canada) is a locale. Locales are important because they determine:
What text is displayed on your store
The language that’s used for the checkout process
The currency that’s used for prices
How to change your store’s locale
1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings.
2. Under Store settings, click General.
3. In the Standard section, next to Country, click Edit.
4. In the pop-up modal, select the country where your business is located from the drop-down menu.
Note If you’re changing your store’s country to Canada, you can also choose a province.
However, just because a shop is set up for a certain locale doesn’t mean that it can only sell to people in that locale. Shopify allows you to sell to multiple locales at once, which is perfect for shops that want to reach a global audience.
To change the locale of your shop, go to your shop’s admin page and click on Settings. From there, you’ll be able to select your desired locale from the drop-down menu. Keep in mind that you’ll need to have a separate version of your shop for each locale that you want to sell to.
5. When you’re finished, click Save.
- From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Checkout.
- Under Language , click Edit.
- In the pop-up modal, select the language that you want from the drop-down menu.

- Under Currency , next to Formatting and conversion options for this currency, click Edit.
