What Is Private Visibility on UpWork?

Last updated on September 30, 2022 @ 9:19 pm

As a freelancer, you have the option to make your profile private or public. If you make your profile public, anyone can view your profile and contact you for work.

If you make your profile private, only people you invite can view your profile and contact you for work.

You may want to make your profile private if:

  • You’re just getting started on UpWork and don’t have any feedback yet
  • You only want to work with a select few clients
  • You’re already working with clients and don’t want to be inundated with new requests

If you do decide to make your profile private, know that you can always change your mind later. You can switch back and forth between public and private as often as you’d like.

PRO TIP: Upwork’s private visibility setting allows freelancers to control who can see their profile and portfolio. This is a great way to keep your information private if you’re not ready to work with a particular client. However, it’s important to remember that private visibility does not guarantee anonymity. Your profile and portfolio can still be found by clients who know your name or email address.

The UpWork platform gives users the ability to control how visible their profile is to potential clients. By default, all profiles are public, meaning anyone can view the freelancer’s information and request work.

For some users, this default setting may not be ideal – especially for those who are new to UpWork and don’t have any feedback yet, or those who only want to work with a select few clients. In these cases, users may elect to change their visibility settings to “private.”

A private profile on UpWork is only viewable by people who the user has invited to see it. This invitation can be sent via a link, which the freelancer can share however they’d like. Once an invitation is accepted, that person will be able to see everything on the freelancer’s public profile, plus any additional information they’ve chosen to share privately.

It’s important to note that users are not locked into one setting – they can change their visibility from public to private (and vice versa) as often as they like.
