What is RPO and RTO?

RPO (Recovery Point Objective) is the objective of minimizing the time between a data loss event and the point when the organization can start restoring data. RTO (Recovery Time Objective) is the objective of minimizing the time required to restore data to its pre-loss state.

PRO TIP: RPO and RTO are acronyms that are often used interchangeably, but they represent two different concepts. RPO stands for Recovery Point Objective and RTO stands for Recovery Time Objective.

RPO is the point in time to which you want to be able to recover your data. RTO is the amount of time it will take to recover your data.

Both concepts are important when planning for disaster recovery in AWS.

RPO and RTO can be used to define the maximum amount of time that data can be lost and still be recovered within a certain time frame. This helps organizations define acceptable levels of data loss and ensures that they are taking measures to minimize the possibility of data loss in the first place.

RPO and RTO can also be used to define the maximum amount of time that data can be restored within a certain time frame. This helps organizations define acceptable levels of service and ensures that they are taking measures to restore data as quickly as possible after a data loss event.
