Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is also the name of its proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems.

Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake after attempting to open Snowdevil, an online store for snowboarding equipment. Lütke used the open source web application framework Ruby on Rails to build Snowdevil’s online store, and launched it after two months of development. Weinand and Lake recruited developers who had worked on their previous eCommerce ventures.. Over the next 10 years, Shopify partnered with major players in the eCommerce space including Amazon, Google, and Facebook.
In 2015, Shopify launched Shopify Payments (now known as Shopify Payments powered by Stripe), which allowed merchants to accept credit cards without having to sign up for a third-party payment gateway. In 2016, Shopify acquired Boltmade (a software development studio) and Tictail (a Scandinavian e-commerce platform), which helped it expand its reach in Europe. In 2019, Shopify acquired 6 River Systems (a Boston-based robotics company) in order to further its goal of providing end-to-end solutions for its merchants.
