What is the difference between managed and unmanaged VPS?

Last updated on September 25, 2022 @ 2:39 pm

A managed VPS is one that is managed by a VPS hosting company or an administrative team. This means the provider has control over the operating system, applications, networking, and security.

Managed VPS providers typically offer 24/7 customer support and a variety of features, such as automatic updates, intrusion detection and prevention, and backup and recovery.

PRO TIP: Please be aware that managed and unmanaged VPS can refer to two different things:

1) The level of support that your VPS provider offers. A managed VPS will typically come with more support and assistance from your provider, while an unmanaged VPS will usually require you to do more of the work yourself.

2) The type of virtualization used. A managed VPS will usually be based on full virtualization, while an unmanaged VPS may use a less resource-intensive form of virtualization such as para-virtualization.

Unmanaged VPSes are not typically managed and are not subject to the same level of control. These servers are typically purchased by individual users and are not typically monitored by a third-party.

Unmanaged VPSes typically have lower performance and can be more expensive than managed VPSes.
