As a general rule, your images should be at least 1200px by 1200px to be high enough quality for Shopify. However, the size of your images will also depend on how you plan on using them.
For example, if you want to use them as product photos, then they should be at least 1024px by 1024px. If you just want to use them as background images or in sliders, then they can be smaller, but we still recommend at least 800px by 800px.
Shopify uses a content delivery network (CDN) to serve your images, which means that the images are served from servers that are optimized for speed and performance. This means that your images will load faster, which is important for both your customers and for your Google search ranking.
To get the best results with your images, we recommend using the following file formats:
Shopify recommends using images that are at least 1024x1024px for the best results. Images that are too small may not be visible on some devices, and images that are too large may take up too much space on your server.
JPEG: Use JPEGs for product photos, blog photos, and photos with lots of detail. They’re great for photos that need to be high quality but don’t need transparency. PNG: Use PNGs for logos and icons, or whenever you need a transparent background. They’re also good for text because they preserve all the details of the letters.
Just keep in mind that PNG files are usually larger than JPEGs or GIFs, so they might take longer to load. GIF: Use GIFs for animated logos or images. They’re also good for small graphics with few colors, like icons or buttons.
When it comes to image file size, smaller is better. A smaller file size means that your pages will load faster, which is important for both your customers and your Google search ranking.
To give you an idea of what file size is considered small, most images on Shopify are between 50KB and 100KB. To get an image under 100KB, you might have to save it at a lower quality setting or resize it so it’s not quite as big.
