Where Is DNS Configuration on Squarespace?

Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 3:03 am

DNS, or Domain Name System, is the system that converts human-readable website names (like www.example.com) into machine-readable IP addresses (like 192.168.0.1). When you type a website name into your browser, DNS is what looks up and translates that name into the IP address of the server where the website is hosted.

For most Squarespace sites, we handle DNS automatically. This means that our system connects your site’s domain name to our IP address, so visitors can find your site when they type your domain name into their browser.

In some cases, you may need to update your DNS settings to point your domain to Squarespace. This is usually necessary if you’re using a third-party domain registrar instead of Squarespace Domains.

To check whether your DNS settings are pointing to Squarespace:

  • First, log in to your account and go to Domains.
  • If you see DNS & Redirects under the Advanced section, your DNS settings are pointing to Squarespace.
  • If you don’t see DNS & Redirects, click Manage. If you see a message that says “We’re sorry, but we don’t support DNS management for this domain.”, your DNS settings are not pointing to Squarespace.

To update your DNS settings:

  1. First, log in to the account where you manage your domain’s DNS settings (this is usually your domain registrar’s account). If you’re unsure where this is, contact your domain registrar for instructions.
  2. Next, find the page where you can update your DNS records.

This is usually called something like “DNS Management”, “Name Server Management”, or “Advanced Settings”. If you’re having trouble finding this page, contact your domain registrar for help.

  3. Then, add four A records and two CNAME records to your domain’s DNS settings. The values for these records are available in the Domains panel in your Squarespace account.

Once you’ve added these records, it can take up to 48 hours for the changes to propagate. This means that it can take up to 48 hours for visitors to see your site when they type your domain name into their browser.

*If you’re using an external DNS provider like Cloudflare, follow their instructions instead of the ones above.
