Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is also the name of its proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems. Shopify offers online retailers a suite of services “including payments, marketing, shipping and customer engagement” to simplify the process of running an online store for small merchants.

Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake after attempting to open Snowdevil, an online store for snowboarding equipment. Shopify was written in Ruby on Rails by Lütke, Weinand and Lake after hiring a developer to work on their previous failed business venture. Shopify launched its platform in 2006.

In 2010, Shopify started its own App Store. The App Store lets Shopify merchants add features and functionality to their online stores using apps developed by Shopify or third-party developers. In 2015, Shopify acquired Boltmade, a software development company based in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario.

Shopify has been profitable since 2013. In 2015 it generated $205 million in revenue and processed over $40 billion worth of transactions.

In 2016, it processed over $60 billion in payments. As of December 31st 2016, Shopify had 377,500 active shops worldwide, with total gross merchandise volume exceeding $23 billion US dollars.
