Shopify Inc. is a Canadian multinational e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is also the name of its proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems.

Shopify offers online retailers a suite of services “including payments, marketing, shipping and customer engagement tools to simplify the process of running an online store for small merchants. ”

Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake. In 2010, Shopify launched its platform as a SaaS product. In June 2015, Shopify went public on the New York Stock Exchange and Toronto Stock Exchange.

Shopify has been growing rapidly since its public launch in 2015. They have been adding new features and functionality to their platform at a breakneck pace.

In 2018, they added support for bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as payment methods on their platform. This move was largely seen as a way to further legitimize cryptocurrencies as a whole.
