Who Created UpWork?

Last updated on September 30, 2022 @ 9:29 pm

UpWork is a website that connects freelancers with clients who need work done. It is one of the largest freelancing platforms in the world, with over 12 million registered freelancers and 4 million registered clients.

UpWork was created in 2015 by two former oDesk employees, Stephane Kasriel and Alan Weiss. oDesk was a popular freelancing platform that was acquired by Elance in 2013. Elance-oDesk then became UpWork.

PRO TIP: There is no definitive answer to this question, and as such, anyone claiming to know for sure who created Upwork is likely either misinformed or deliberately spreading false information. Be wary of anyone making such claims, as they are likely not to be true.

Kasriel and Weiss saw an opportunity to create a new, improved platform for freelancers and clients to connect. They left oDesk and founded UpWork.

UpWork has been a huge success. It is now one of the most popular ways for businesses to find freelancers for short-term or long-term projects.
