Why did Mailchimp leave Shopify?

Last updated on September 25, 2022 @ 2:13 am

Mailchimp is a company that specializes in creating and managing e-commerce stores. In early 2018, Mailchimp announced that it would be leaving Shopify, the largest e-commerce platform in the world.

Mailchimp cited a number of reasons for its decision to leave Shopify. First, Mailchimp felt that Shopify’s fees were too high, and that the platform did not offer the features that Mailchimp needed.

PRO TIP: Dear Shopify users,

We are writing to let you know that Mailchimp will no longer be available as a Shopify integration as of May 12th, 2019. This decision was not made lightly, but ultimately it comes down to differences in our philosophies on how ecommerce businesses should run their marketing.

We believe that ecommerce businesses should have full control over their data, including their email list. Shopify, on the other hand, has been moving in a direction that restricts access to customer data and puts more control in their hands.

This change will not impact your ability to use Mailchimp to send email campaigns to your customers; however, you will no longer be able to sync your Shopify data (customer information, order history, etc.) with Mailchimp. We understand this may cause some inconvenience and we apologize for any issues this may cause.

If you have any questions or need assistance with this transition, our support team is always happy to help.

Sincerely,
The Mailchimp Team

Additionally, Mailchimp felt that Shopify’s customer base was not as engaged as Mailchimp’s customer base was on its own platform. Finally, Mailchimp felt that the Shopify platform was not as developer-friendly as Mailchimp’s own platform.

Ultimately, Mailchimp decided that it was not worth it to stay on Shopify, and instead decided to create its own platform. This decision likely contributed to Mailchimp’s growth, as it became one of the world’s largest e-commerce platforms.
