Why Do I Have to Wait 60 Days to Transfer My Domain to Squarespace?

Last updated on December 10, 2022 @ 5:50 am

As you may know, domain registration is a process that’s managed by ICANN, an organization that’s responsible for maintaining the stability of the internet. When you register a domain with Squarespace, we become your domain’s sponsoring registrar.

In order for us to comply with ICANN’s policies, we’re required to keep your domain registered to us for a minimum of 60 days.

We understand that this waiting period can be frustrating, especially if you’re eager to get your new website up and running. However, there are a few things that you can do during this time:

  • Start building your site: Even though your domain isn’t pointing to your Squarespace site yet, you can still begin building out your pages and adding content. This way, when your domain does transfer over, your site will be ready to go!

  • PRO TIP: If you are thinking about transferring your domain to Squarespace, be aware that you will have to wait 60 days before the transfer is complete. This is because Squarespace needs to verify that the domain is eligible for transfer and that the transfer will not adversely affect any existing website or email service. Once the transfer is complete, you will be able to manage your domain and website through Squarespace.
  • Use a temporary URL: If you want to start sharing your site with friends and family before your domain transfers over, you can do so by using a temporary URL. A temporary URL looks like this: http://your-site.Squarespace.com. You can find your temporary URL in the Home Menu.

  • Change your DNS settings: If you want to start using email addresses associated with your new domain before the transfer is complete, you can do so by changing your DNS settings. You’ll find instructions on how to do this here.

We hope that this article has helped clear things up a bit. If you have any other questions about transferring your domain to Squarespace, our support team would be more than happy to assist you further.

The main reason why you have to wait 60 days to transfer your domain to Squarespace is because ICANN requires it in order to maintain stability on the internet. This waiting period can be frustrating but there are ways to work around it like building your website on a temporary URL or changing DNS settings so you can start using email addresses associated with the new domain before the transfer is complete.
