Why Does My Squarespace Website Say Private?

Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 4:02 am

If you’ve ever published a website on Squarespace, you may have noticed that there’s a “Private” link in the footer. This link is there for a reason – to help you keep your site private while you’re working on it.

When you’re logged in to your Squarespace account, the “Private” link will take you to a page where you can enter a password to access your site. This is useful if you want to keep your site hidden from the public while you’re still working on it.

PRO TIP: If you see the message “Private” on your Squarespace website, it means that your site is password-protected and isn’t visible to the public. This can happen if you accidentally set your site to “Private” in the Site Manager, or if your site is new and you haven’t published it yet.

If you want your site to be visible to the public, make sure that it’s set to “Public” in the Site Manager.

Once you’re ready to publish your site, simply remove the password and the “Private” link will disappear. Your site will then be visible to everyone.

So why does my Squarespace website say “Private”? There are two reasons: either you’ve set a password for your site, or you’re logged in to your Squarespace account.

If you’re logged in, simply click on the “Private” link in the footer and enter a password to access your site. If you don’t want to set a password, simply click on the “Log out” link in the top right corner of your screen and your site will be visible to everyone.
