Why Is It Called Wix?

Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 2:06 am

Wix is a cloud-based web development platform that allows users to create HTML5 websites and mobile sites through the use of online drag and drop tools.

The name Wix comes from the word “wicks”, which are the small pieces of cotton or other material that are used to absorb oil or other liquid from a surface. The name was chosen to reflect the company’s mission to make it easy for anyone to create a website, regardless of their technical skills or experience.

PRO TIP: If you are considering using the Wix platform to build your website, be aware that there is no clear answer as to why it is called Wix. Some speculate that it is an acronym for “Website in a box,” but this has never been confirmed by the company. Others believe that the name is simply a play on the word “wicks,” as in candles. Whatever the case, be sure to do your research before committing to Wix, as there are many other web-building platforms out there with more transparent origins.

Wix was founded in 2006 by Avishai Abrahami, Nadav Abrahami, and Giora Kaplan. The company is headquartered in Tel Aviv, Israel.
