If you’re running a website on Squarespace, you may have noticed that your site says “Not Secure” in the browser bar. Don’t worry, this is not a sign that your site has been hacked or that there’s anything wrong with Squarespace.
In fact, this is likely just a sign that you haven’t yet set up SSL for your domain.
SSL, or Secure Sockets Layer, is a protocol that allows for encrypted communication between a web server and a web browser. When SSL is enabled on a website, the connection between the server and the browser is secure and information passed back and forth between them is encrypted.
This makes it much more difficult for hackers to intercept and steal data.
Squarespace supports SSL on all domains, but it’s not enabled by default. You’ll need to enable it yourself in the Domains section of your site’s settings.
Once you do, your site will automatically switch to using HTTPS and the “Not Secure” message will go away.
To avoid the “Not Secure” warning, we recommend enabling SSL for your site. SSL encrypts traffic between your site and visitors’ browsers, ensuring that sensitive data like passwords and credit card numbers can’t be intercepted. It also helps build trust with your visitors by showing them that you’re taking steps to keep their information safe.
