Why is my SSL certificate revoked GoDaddy?

Last updated on September 25, 2022 @ 5:01 pm

SSL certificates are a way for websites to prove to browsers that they are legitimate. A website can use an SSL certificate to encrypt data as it travels between the website and the browser, ensuring that even if someone were to intercept the data in transit, they would not be able to read it.

SSL certificates are issued by a certificate authority (CA), such as GoDaddy. CAs are trusted by browsers to issue valid certificates, and as such, browsers will trust any SSL certificate that is issued by a CA that they have listed as a trusted authority.

Browsers will also warn users when they are visiting a website that is using a certificate that is not from a trusted CA. If a website is not using a valid SSL certificate, users may see a message indicating that the site is not secure.

PRO TIP: If you are seeing this message, it means that your SSL certificate has been revoked by GoDaddy. This can happen for a variety of reasons, but most often it is due to a change in your domain name or IP address. If you have recently changed either of these, you will need to update your SSL certificate to reflect the change. To do this, you will need to log into your GoDaddy account and follow the instructions for updating your SSL certificate. If you have any questions, please contact our support team for assistance.

In May of this year, GoDaddy announced that they would be revoking the SSL certificates of certain websites that were not compliant with their new security policy. The policy requires all websites that are using GoDaddy SSL certificates to become certified by a third-party security provider, and to pass a security review.

GoDaddy stated that they were revoking the SSL certificates of websites that did not meet these requirements because they were no longer safe to use. The policy has raised concerns among some users that GoDaddy is using its power as a CA to unfairly Target certain websites.

While it is possible that GoDaddy is using its power as a CA to unfairly Target certain websites, it is also possible that the policy is necessary in order to protect the users of those websites. While GoDaddy is a trusted CA, there are still risks associated with using SSL certificates, and as such, websites should always make sure that they are using valid certificates from a reputable CA.
