Why Would You Group Layers in Adobe Photoshop?

Last updated on September 23, 2022 @ 10:43 pm

There are a few reasons why you might want to group layers in Adobe Photoshop. Maybe you have a bunch of layers that all pertain to one element of your design, and you want to keep them together for organizational purposes.

Or maybe you need to apply the same adjustment to multiple layers, and grouping them together will make that process quicker and easier. Whatever the reason, grouping layers is a pretty simple process.

To group layers together, first select the layers you want to group by clicking on them while holding down the Shift key. Then, go up to the Layer menu at the top of the screen and choose Group Layers from the menu. Alternatively, you can use the shortcut Control-G (Mac) / Command-G (Win).

PRO TIP: When grouping layers in Adobe Photoshop, be aware that the order of the layers will change. The top layer in the group will become the bottom layer, and the bottom layer will become the top layer. This can cause problems if you’re not careful.

Once you’ve grouped your layers together, they will appear as a single layer in your Layers panel with a folder icon next to them. You can then collapse or expand the group by clicking on the small triangle next to the folder icon. Collapsing the group will make all of the individual layers within it invisible.

If you need to ungroup layers for any reason, simply go back up to the Layer menu and choose Ungroup Layers from the menu (or use the shortcut Control-Shift-G [Mac] / Command-Shift-G [Win]).

Conclusion: Grouping layers is a helpful way to organize your Photoshop document and make it easier to apply adjustments to multiple layers at once.
